Get Out!
If you have the gear and the guts, the sky’s the limit.
By Joel Warner

When you need a study break, nothing beats spending time in the great outdoors. And whether your idea of an adventure is a walk in the park or plunging into subterranean caverns, the Pittsburgh region has it.

Pittsburgh has the feel of a big city, but it also has a wild side. Students can easily escape the urban hustle and bustle, whether it means heading to the neighborhood park or driving over the hills and into the countryside.

"The Pittsburgh area is a hidden treasure," said Michael Sobkowiak, of Venture Outdoors. "It has all the amenities of a big city, but students are amazed how simple it is to hike and bike right outside their dorms, or enjoy a day in the countryside. We have everything here short of glacier walking."

The 1,700 acres of parkland in Pittburgh's urban core means that there are endless activities right off campus, including hiking trails, beach volleyball courts, equestrian trails, swimming pools, public golf courses and even Frisbee golf courses.

In this city, bikes are so common the buses are equipped with bike racks. City trails make it easy to zoom around Pittsburgh on two wheels or two feet. And don't forget about the three rivers that converge in Pittsburgh, which are filled with sculls, canoes, kayaks, and motorboats.

That's just the beginning. Outside the city limits, Southwestern PA boasts a breathtaking array of state forests, national parks, mountain resorts, rivers, gorges, and caves.

Mountain biking. Backpacking. Camping. Fly fishing. Rock climbing. Snow shoeing. Sailing. Snow tubing. Bird watching. Sky diving. Cross-country skiing. Kayaking. Star gazing. Scuba diving. Hang gliding. If you have the gear and the guts, the sky's the limit in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Don't worry if you don't have a car. Thanks to the numerous outdoors clubs on and off campus, there's always a group of adventurers getting ready to hit the road.

What are you waiting for? Grab your swimsuit, bike, hiking boots and skis and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime, right here in Pittsburgh.
